Friday’s Formula

Once again it’s Friday….where did the week go??!

I found a truly inspirational sketch from the pencil lines website.  If you haven’t had the chance to check them out, now is the time to do so.  There are so many wonderful sketches to choose from, with amazing examples of each sketch from their design team members.  I had a hard time choosing just one ;)

I chose this sketch by Michele Beck.

I loved the scalloped edges with the bold title and also the perfect potential for paper blocking the large rectangles offered.  I found it worked better for me to flip the sketch,  I kept the basic design the same but added a little flair in the upper left hand corner for a fun visual effect.  I then balanced it out by adding more buttons below the flower in the lower right hand corner.

Originally I was going to use the Spring Fling – Umbrella Scallop for the sides, but  I preferred the definition and color that the Spring Fling – Green Lace offered.  I also used these papers from the Spring Fling collection;  Spring Flowers, Tree House, Flower Beds, and finally Rain Showers for the circle, along with the ‘Office Lingo’ clear stamps.

That is the perfect thing about sketches….you can use them to adapt your own ideas, while getting that little ‘design push’ you may need to get out of a slump.

Pencil lines put up a new sketch every week on Sunday at 8pm GMT (1 pm MST).

I hope you have a great weekend with lots of ‘play’ time!!!

Thursday’s Trends: Off the Page

Hi, this is Anabelle and I’m here to share with you a fun new trend I’ve been noticing – building layouts that go off the page! Papers have been coming out in lots of different shapes. Layering these shapes and adding embellishments that flow off the edges create really unique and artistic designs.

To create my page, I traced another paper onto the floral paper and cut it out to use as my base. I used the scalloped paper as the background of my photo. I started building my page. To make sure that it would fit into a 12 by 12 page protector for my album, I layed another piece of paper underneath it to use as a guide.

I finished the page. Using the paper underneath it, I now had a page that would be 12 by 12 at it’s widest points.

This page is about my memories of playing in the backyard with my brother. The photo was taken in 1970, when I was five. ;)

A couple of technique notes: I used green and yellow chalks to add color to the pieces of lace cardstock. I also used the die cut circles as flower centers. (LOVE those Maya Road flowers) The birds were painted and I added glitter to them.  And the ric rac was found at an antique mall. I love how anything vintage goes so well with Pink Paislee.  The birds’ wings are also from the die cut sheet.

So, the next time you make a layout, don’t be afraid to use a fun shape and build off the page. I’m sure you’ll love the results!!

Have a great day,

Anabelle
