Trendy Thursday – My First Altered Canvas!

Hi everyone!

To kickstart your Trendy Thursday, I’m sharing with you my first attempt at altering a canvas. I’m seeing a growing trend of ‘mixed media’ in scrapbooking, of using different mediums and textures to create a piece of art that is unique and one of a kind.

My friend Sharon does a great job in mixed media on canvas (well on anything, really) and I’ve always admired her art. Me on the other hand, I’m afraid of getting my hands dirty using paints, inks and other gooey mediums. Tools even like a simple heat gun can put me totally off a project. I think I mostly am afraid of making a mistake, even though I know there’s no such thing in creating art.

Well, I decided to finally give it a go and here’s presenting a sort-of mixed media canvas.

After prepping the canvas with a layer of gesso, I brushed on a layer of turquoise paint – trying to do it ‘imperfectly’ so that it has an arty background. :) Then I placed a border of lace paper on two edges of the canvas as a stencil and sprayed some metallic mist over the lace. I also stamped repetitions of an icon from the Amber Road Impressions Stamp set for the bottom border of the canvas. I then embossed the stamped images with some silver embossing tinsel.

Ultimately however, I am still a paper-and-ribbons girl so I cut out lots of that gorgeous foliage from the Amber Road Autumn Blossom paper and layered them over the arty canvas. These were embellished with some self-adhesive pearls and punched butterflies using the Mistletoe and Co North Pole paper.

Main phrase from my current favorite quote was created using a variety of alphas from Pink Paislee, namely the new Expressions Glitter Alphabets and Expressions Whimsies Alphabets, and older Fashion Script stickers. The rest of the quote was finished in my imperfect handwriting.

Some ribbons and flowers were the finishing touch to the canvas.

So after creating this canvas, I must say that creating with mixed media is definitely an experience. I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface of this trend, but I’m excited to explore more! How about you? Share your art with the rest of the Pink fans on livepink.ning.com! Can’t wait to see!
