The Christmas tree seems to be the centerpiece of the holidays… at least, it is at our house! We gather around the tree to open gifts, have a mug of hot cocoa, sing along to holiday tunes on the radio, or just to sit late at night and admire the twinkling colored lights in the otherwise complete darkness. Since we spend so much time around the tree, we love it to look gorgeous. And, let’s face it… the tree topper is the most important final touch to any tree. Having trouble finding the perfect piece to top your tannenbaum? Why not try making your own?
It’s quite simple, really. All you need is one of these large styrofoam stars and a 10-light strand of battery-powered lights (both readily available at your local craft store). Then, grab you favorite Mistletoe & Co. goodies, and let’s get started!
First, you’ll want to paint the back side and edges of the star. I chose a silver acrylic paint. Once dry, adhere a piece of patterned paper to the front side. Trim out the shape using a craft knife.
Don’t worry if any of the paper edges are a little jagged. Were going to cover them up right now with some vintage wired tinsel (pipe cleaners work great too!). Attach using hot glue.
Now, to adorn the center of the star. Start with a ruffle of crepe paper, secured with some more hot glue.
Next, take one of the fabric tags, accordion-fold it, and staple it in the center. Adhere that to the top of the crepe paper ruffle, top it with some glittery branches, and a little tag!
Now, it’s time to add the lights! Since we’re working with styrofoam, this will be simple. Just push the lights through at each outer and inner point of the star. Secure the wires and the battery pack to the back of the star using hot glue.
Don’t worry if the edges of the paper around where the lights poked through are a little ragged. We’re just going to put some flowers around each light. And, I went around the lights in the center with a little glitter glue to cover-up the rough edges. Then, cut some 1/2″-wide strips of paper, back them with adhesive, and pleat them towards the points of the star.
And, there you have it… your own personalized tree-topper!
Happy holidays everyone!
