Butterfly Garden Altered Art

Good Friday morning everyone!  Nancy here with a Butterfly Garden altered project that is both fun to make and functional. I was recently looking for a new desk organizer for my outgoing mail and purchased this plain wood holder at Michael’s. I knew I wanted to dress it up and what more perfect way than with some paper and butterflies.

I started the project by painting most of the piece in a cream color and sponging it with brown ink for the shabby look I wanted to create. Then I made a row of paper rolls by using strips of patterned paper, rolling them up with a pencil and gluing down the ends with Scotch’s Fast Drying Wet Glue.  Here is a picture of my project in the process.

I used a hot glue gun to adhere an entire row of rolled up paper logs to the bottom of the wood piece. I added some rope and a butterfly for a simple embellishment.

I then altered a wood shape from the Butterfly Garden collection with Glimmer Mist in Silver Sugar and Glimmer Glaze in Pewter. It has an almost metallic sheen that is really hard to show in a picture. I also placed a butterfly from the collection on top for added dimension.

Lastly, I covered the middle partition with a very plain portion of Butterfly Garden patterned paper that went perfectly with my letter theme. Here is the completed project. Simple, pretty and functional!

If I Can’t Eat It, I Can Scrap it!

For the last six months, I’ve been on a relatively strict diet. So when I saw this magnificent cake, I immediately wanted to eat it.  But since I couldn’t, I did the next best thing: I saved it in my Pinterest and decided to use it for inspiration.

White, teal, pink and red might be my favorite color combination of all time. Inspired by the cake, I pulled out all my Pink Paislee products in those colors (and there are many!) and just decided to have fun. Here’s what I ended up with:

The journaling Reads: My sweet boy, as your mom, I make daily decisions that shape your future. What school you get to go to, which friends you can play with, what activities are best, etc. And while I always do my very best to think it through I also worry every day that my decisions are the best ones for you I hope and pray that I am opening and closing the right doors. One thing I know, I am doing my very best to do right by your every step of the way.

Here’s a close up:

Don’t the colors red, teal, and pink work so well together? This layout combines papers from Daily Junque, Hometown Summer, and Sweetness.

So, if you’re like me and can’t eat delicious-looking cakes, maybe you can use the vibrant colors on your next layout!

Today’s Tutorial: Dressing It Up

Hi Everyone!! Piradee here to share a little something that you can do to dress up those gorgeous wood shapes.  For my layout today, I used the ones from the Butterfly Garden collection along with the coordinating press ons to dress them up abit.

Selecting one of the images, I applied it onto the wooden butterfly piece covering only a portion of the surface so that the wood details would still show.

Then also to dress up the pattern papers abit, I turned to the cuttlebug embossing folders.  I first cut the pattern papers that I wanted to use into 4×4 sqaures (also part of the layout design) and these also fit perfectly into the folders.

And after running these through the cuttlebug machine, I had the perfect texture and that small little detail that I was looking for.   Also sharing how I keep things straight, well I don’t and therefore always rely on my must have ruler… lol.

And after adding a few more details and embellishment pieces…

I really do love how the butterfly blends with the pattern papers in the background but still has that “white space” that makes it stand out….

and the dry embossing touches, finishes off the vintage look and feel that I wanted for the layout.

Thanks for stopping by everyone and would love see what you’ve been doing with those gorgeous wood shapes.

Mist Mania {All About Party Pink}

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend!

Today we are talking about “mist mania”, one of my favorite topics.  Misting is the perfect embellishment.  It goes with everything.

It is especially fitting for a party layout, and what better color to use on a birthday layout then “Party Pink??!”

I made this layout of my daughter’s fifth birthday party.  She is crazy about pinatas!!!

I used mist on the entire right side of the layout.  I love using mist on white card stock.  I did a very fine mist by holding the bottle further away from the layout, then brought the bottle in closer for a couple of larger drops.

For the letters, I placed those on a separate piece of paper to mist.  Make sure to place them lightly to the paper so they don’t stick!  Since they are foam, they accept the color really well.  They do need about 5 minutes or so to dry before removing them to use on your layout.

I used my Cricut to punch out these butterfly shapes.  I misted those separately as well, then used my sewing machine to attach them to my layout.  One of our design team members (Danielle Flanders) used the postage stamp shape on her layout (from Cricut) and I loved it!  So I used the same shape, cutting it in half for either side of my photo.

The product used on this layout comes from the Soiree collection, as well as the Expressions Cushies Alphabet in Lemon.

Next time you pull out product to make a layout, grab some of that mist.  Try mixing colors too.  There are so many possibilities!
