Designer Details – Creating Frames

Hi again!

I am back to share a technique I use in many of my layouts lately. I tend to scrap only white cardstock backgrounds and I like to stitch along the edges of my layout to make sure your eyes don’t wander off the page. Lately, I’ve begun to add frames to my layouts so the edges are even more pronounced and your eyes stay within the bounds of my layout.

Here’s a page I made this week using the Vintage Vogue line and this technique:

I still get my white background, which I love, but I also get some extra color on the edges and a clear frame around my page. Creating this frame is very easy.

The first thing I do is take the paper I want on my outer edge. For this layout I picked the Eau de Parfume paper. I used my trimmer to cut out the inside of the page leaving only a 0.5 inch border.

You can also use a craft knife. I cannot cut straight to save my life so the trimmer works better for me.

I then turned the border over and adhered the trim to the back of the border so some of it was sneaking out and some of it was adhered to my border.

Don’t worry if your paper curls like mine did because in the next step, you will glue and stitch the border down.

So I then turned it over, adhered it down and used a contrasting color thread to do a zigzag stitch where the ribbon and the frame meet.

Then I decided I wanted more pink so I used a border punch to create and edge and then I cut it into a strip and adhered it under my purple trim. I created four of these strips and my border was complete. The next thing I did was to layout my title and then to color the wooden letters.

I like to use chalk ink because I like the matte finish and I love how quickly it dries. I then put the rest of my title, added some journaling and decided to finish off the edges with some small embellishments. Having elements on the edges of my layout is another technique to draw your eye to the middle of my page where the “meat” is.

I like to layer my embellishments so I picked one of the chipboard pops and put it on top of the paper rosette. I also layered  the chipboards on top of each other to make sure the colors matched my layout.

Here’s another set on the other side of the layout:

Here I layered the chipboard on top of the ephemera to make it less black.

And finally, here’s a look at the layering I have under the photo:

I used the ephemera to add a bit more interest and color to my photo. I also addded a brad on the spool button and a few more small chipboard pieces and my layout was done. Here it is again:

If you’ve never created a border for your layout, I hope you’ll give it a try. It works just as well on a pattern paper background. And if you do give it a try make sure to share it with us in the Live Pink! Gallery.

A Simple Story by Vintage Vogue

Today’s post is about one of my favorite aspects of scrapbooking – telling your story! Most of my pages are centered around something I want to remember, an opinion or something I want to pass down.

The photo in my layout is my grandparents’ engagement portrait. I wish I knew more about how they met and fell I love. I wasn’t sure how to go about scrapping this picture, so I started with what I knew. I may not know the details of their courtship , but I do know how their story ended and how they influenced my life.

Since I only had one photo to showcase, it left plenty of room to play! I started with the Mistables Misting Mask. I love the cathedral quilt shape – it’s one of my favorites! I decided to use the mask as a stencil to trace onto a sheet of ledger patterned paper.  I cut it out carefully with an exacto knife and erased all of the pencil lines. I used the full 6×12 size on my layout.

Next,  I cut 1/2″ strips of patterned paper from the Vintage Vogue line and glued them in a diagonal pattern so that it would peek through the small windows. I used the 6×6 paper pack  for these strips because the smaller prints worked better in the design.

I used a 6×6 sheet from the Vintage Vogue paper pack to mat my photo and set it apart from the quilt design. A few Mistables and Wood Shop products straight out of the package add a neutral and soft touch to the layout.

I love how Vintage Vogue  compliments both the photo and the story!

Creating with the Cricut

Hey there! Michelle here to share a fun layout using my Cricut and some papers from the Vintage Vogue collection.  I took this photo the first week of school and it still cracks me up; my daughter is nothing short of sassy!  Of course she saves the sass for those closest to her.  I knew this layout needed a fun and whimsical touch to it!

The one thing that I loved about this image is that little heart cut out. I used the Cricut Rock Princess Cartridge to create the many hearts. I wanted to layers them and make a sort of “spray” on the layout.  It definitely added to the fun/girly look I was going for!

I added just a touch of grey mist to the wood shop alphas and the layout because it needed a little something extra.

I hope this inspired you to use your cricut along with Vintage Vogue paper.  I found it especially nice that I could use side A or B when cutting my hearts.

A Circle of Butterflies

Hello!

If you’ve seen any of my layouts, you might know that I am a big fan of butterflies so it should come as no surprise that when I saw this image on Pinterest, I immediately fell in love.

(source)

I loved everything about this bouquet: the colors, whimsy, and the fact that there were so many different butterflies. I decided to use the same idea for my layout. I have quite a few butterfly punches so I punched one of each of the Vintage Vogue papers using every one of my punches. And then I drew a circle on my page and glued all my big butterflies in a circle. I then stitched them all down. After that. I randomly added the smaller butterflies. I liked that the bouquet had airiness and dimension so I wanted to give the same sense which is why I put some smaller ones on top. And then I added the super-small ones because I wanted to give the feel that a few of them were fluttering away. Here’s how the layout turned out.

The title and journaling Reads: My best gift to you was to teach you to practice gratitude daily. My sweet boy, I really hope that you continue writing one thing you’re grateful for every day for the rest of your life.

In the picture is my son with his gratitude journal in which he writes one thing he’s grateful for every single night.

Here’s a close up so you can see how some of the butterflies’ wings are bent up like they are in flight.

The title uses Expressions Cushions in Passionfruit and the wood chip alphas which I inked with black ink.  I thought there was already quite a bit going on in this layout and I didn’t want anything to take away from the butterflies so I only added the title, journaling, photo and some stitching. Thanks to the butterflies, there’s more than enough to keep your eyes on the page for quite some time.

So, if you’re like me and can’t resist butterflies, maybe you can try putting a ton of them on your next layout!
