Winter Wonderland Event {Day 5 Cookie Cutter Ornaments}

Welcome to day 5 of our Winter Wonderland Event!  I can’t believe there are still 7 more days of inspiration and FUN projects to share after today.

The other day I found a package of metal star-shaped cookie cutters in the baking section of the craft store, and I thought I could do something fun with them. There were four stars in the package stacked together, in all different sizes. The Snow Day line is perfect for dressing them up to create a few fun ornaments this year! These ornaments can hang on the Christmas tree, or just set on a shelf for the winter. These can be backed with patterned papers, die cuts or even photos!

To create these, I traced the stars onto patterned paper, cut the paper out, and adhered it to the back of the cookie cutter with a hot glue gun. On the largest star, I used the Cozy Sweaters Paper (chevron pattern) and I trimmed the wooden snowflake down to fit inside the cookie cutter. To keep it in place I add hot glue in the center of the star then I brushed it with white paint.  Pom pom trim adds a “snowy” feel around the outside of the ornament, along with some Diamond Dust glitter! Don’t forget to wrap some twine around the top of the stars for hanging. Or you can tie the twine in a bow if you’d like to set them on a table instead.

On the second ornament, I used the blue striped paper in the background, added some Snow Day die ephemera tags inside the star, a Snow Day 3D sticker and more pom pom trim and glitter.

The third ornament is backed with a photo of my girls with their snowman! I added a 3D mitten sticker on the outside, pom pom trim and glitter again.

To dress up the top, I added a little “winter” ephemera tag.

The smallest ornament is backed with the round Snow Day Ephemera die cut, wrapped with creme pom pom trim, and then I added some glitter and pink pom poms with a hot glue gun.

These are very simple to make and would add a nice display for the winter!

I’ve also seen the altered and strung together like a garland – great way to use such an ordinary item. The only “kitchen” item I have re-created with has been the lids to frozen juice concentrate cans. We usually use them with paper, glitter and whatever else the kids have in their craft stash to make quick and easy ornaments.

Clever ideas. I have only used cookie cutters to help with making felt cutouts.

  147. Roxy says:

Love love love the cookie cutter project! I HAVE used utensils in my mixed media art projects. If you take big spoons and yes cookie cutters, you can have some pretty unusual looking dolls. Just wrap the skirt around the part that meets with the spoon, that’s the neck, then the spoon is the face…a cookie cutter star makes an adorable face! and decorate with embellishments, hair, yarn-and all those ‘bits’ you’ve saved that you know you’d use sometime!
These look great peeking out of a large floral arrangement-pretty whimsical! Yay!
    Thanks for the project!

Back when I had very few ornaments I used to hang cookie cutters on the tree. I don’t recall actually using a kitchen item (besides jars) as part of a project. I have used kitchen items many times when creating projects though – bowls, cups and such for tracing circles, meat tenderizer mallet, wisk, and such for adding texture to various mediums and so on.

  161. Randi m says:

I have used old oil bottles to alter and made thank you “bottles” as a substitute for a card and add scrapbook paper around it and add beads, ribbon, charms ANC a stamped “thank you” with a rolled note in the bottle. I used an old metal pan and made a magnet board with handmade letters for my girls and I have used my alphabet cookie cutters to outline and make a banner to match cookies we made for the girls party!!! I also used an old fork to make a stand for an altered picture ( saw this idea on the Internet for bending an old fork to hold a card )!! Thanks for the fun ideas I now need to go buy some star cookie cutters these are soooooo cute!

  162. Melinda Wilson says:

The only thing I have ever used cookie cutters for an art project was to have my kids use them as templates on plain paper and they would color them in. I love today’s project and will try to try making one.

I have used them to cut out shapes to use on projects. Great idea.

  177. Lisa W says:

These are so cute, I love the “snowballs” around them! I haven’t used kitchen items before for crafts unless you count peanut butter jar lids, I turn them into snowglobe ornaments. There made much the same way as the stars are except I usually make a scene of some sort, add glittery/fluffy snow product (can’t think of the name of it) and plastic on the front. Will have to try it with cookie cutters and plastic on both sides.

  178. Nope, but now I’m planning on looking for some cookies cutters!

  179. Nancy Mitchell says:

I have used cookie cutters as danglies on a handmade recipe book; also used a small rolling pin with holes drilled in it – then put the rings thru the holes and used it to hang the recipe book! very cute! Never used cookie cutters other than as ornaments in the kids’ tree – you know the tin of 10 or 12 cutters shaped like reindeer, snowflake and so on you can get around the holidays… they’re pretty hardy and the little ones love them so as tree decorations they are great!

  185. Linda B. says:
