Butterfly Garden Altered Art

Good Friday morning everyone!  Nancy here with a Butterfly Garden altered project that is both fun to make and functional. I was recently looking for a new desk organizer for my outgoing mail and purchased this plain wood holder at Michael’s. I knew I wanted to dress it up and what more perfect way than with some paper and butterflies.

I started the project by painting most of the piece in a cream color and sponging it with brown ink for the shabby look I wanted to create. Then I made a row of paper rolls by using strips of patterned paper, rolling them up with a pencil and gluing down the ends with Scotch’s Fast Drying Wet Glue.  Here is a picture of my project in the process.

I used a hot glue gun to adhere an entire row of rolled up paper logs to the bottom of the wood piece. I added some rope and a butterfly for a simple embellishment.

I then altered a wood shape from the Butterfly Garden collection with Glimmer Mist in Silver Sugar and Glimmer Glaze in Pewter. It has an almost metallic sheen that is really hard to show in a picture. I also placed a butterfly from the collection on top for added dimension.

Lastly, I covered the middle partition with a very plain portion of Butterfly Garden patterned paper that went perfectly with my letter theme. Here is the completed project. Simple, pretty and functional!
