Handmade Holidays: Merry Christmas

12DAYS_BLOGBANNER

I just love the mix of gold and red in the Snow Village collection and to kick off our 12 Days Of Handmade Holidays Event I created a layout in the ‘Spirit of Christmas.’

In Norway where I live we have something called “Nisser” – they kind of look like garden gnomes – and the red hat my daughter is wearing is a knitted  “nisselue” (Santa hat).  These “nisser” were believed to live in barns where they took care of the farm and the animals.

I love to layer several papers, doilies, tiny bags, and tags under my photos and this layout is all about layering. I even used a stack of gold tissue to soften up the edges of this darling photo!

merry christmas - christin_3_small

When I was asked to provide step by step instructions I struggled a bit because I normally just cut at my papers without measuring to achieve the effect I want. My other favorite technique is adding subtle background patterns with stencils and spray mists so this project includes a quick step for adding color to your white cardstock before building your layers!

Even though the kids are 25 and 30 I like to do photos with Santa. They refuse to go out in public to do this so I bought a Santa suit for dh!! Another photo tradition is one with the dated ornament I give them each year.

I’m not really good about doing this every year, but in love taking a picture of DH & I every New Years Eve. I guess it shows another year of progression & more gray hair from the year before!

The only photo traditions we have is take take a photo on the first day of school every year and photos on the children’s birthdays. We also make birthday banners for family living overseas, take a photo of the children holding it – then send it by e-mail.

Since my son was born, I do a ‘photo shoot’ of him dressed up in some Christmas-y outfit and use that as our Christmas card (photo card printed at store). He is growing so fast but the pictures are a whole lot easier to take now that he is older :-)!

    December 9, 2013 - 9:23 am

I am not sure if it’s a photo tradition but it seems that way. It’s trying to get everyone to stand still and pose for at least one Christmas picture at Christmas time. I have so many of people turning the other way, putting their hands up in front of their face or growing about having their picture taken. Is it just my family or are there other people with camera shy relatives out there? :/

  • Robyn Crowningshield
    December 9, 2013 - 9:58 am

The main photo taken is of the boys in their elf or Santa hats on Christmas morning. This year we are going to go out as a family to cut our own tree and I want to continue this as a tradition. It seems so fun especially if there is snow.

  • Alexia Misso
    December 9, 2013 - 10:25 am

With Christmas tree and presents, also the ornaments we got for them the past years.

  • Beverly Jordan
    December 9, 2013 - 10:28 am

Right now just getting all 5 of us adults in one place during Christmas season is doing good. So I would say, having a family picture together would be the one tradition that is still in place.

  • goldenblind221
    December 9, 2013 - 11:37 am

Every year is the obligatory new pajama photo op by the christmas tree. Everyone gets new PJs on Christmas morning, and after all the presents are opened we scurry off to try them on, then model them next to the Christmas tree and snap a couple family pics.

  • Vicki Parker
    December 9, 2013 - 11:51 am

Always the tree once it is fully decorated and the dog in his Santa hat. Theres usually a family photo at some point but that is getting harder to get with kids moving away etc.

    December 9, 2013 - 11:53 am

I love the photo and the LO! The gold is really so wonderful and I think it’s fabulous how you started with the gold Color Shine on the background! The tissue paper really is fabulous, too! Thanks so much for sharing!

My daughter started a tradition of wearing our tree skirt, so we have a tradition of getting pictures of her (and sometimes her brother) modeling the tree skirt. It’s just such a fun and silly thing that we love!

  • Heather Mills
    December 9, 2013 - 12:25 pm

I don’t know that we have a “real” holiday photo tradition. I do take a picture of the girls to send out in our Christmas cards so I guess that’s tradition. But sometimes they are dressed up sometimes dressed regular, sometimes in front of a tree, sometimes not. I guess I need to get better at that!

  • Wendy A
    December 9, 2013 - 12:46 pm

EVery year I take a pic of the kids as they come down the steps before opening presents, another right after they have opened stockings and before the wrapped gifts, and we take a family picture to send (which I still need to do).

  • Tronesia
    December 9, 2013 - 12:54 pm

Each year we all spend Christmas Eve together in our PJs watching movies and eating all of our favorite foods. We also decorate cookies and gingerbread houses.

  • Debra Watson
    December 9, 2013 - 1:14 pm

Every Christmas Eve my kids get to open up 1 present and it is always a brand new pair of pajamas. This was a tradition when I was a child and have passed it along now to my kids. They know what it is but still get very excited. Nothing better than new comfy pj’s.

  • Janetta Zeimetz
    December 9, 2013 - 1:19 pm

I take the kids’ pictures in front of the tree every year. They secretly hate it :o). Now, smile!

  • Carmen
    December 9, 2013 - 1:19 pm

We’ve started to take my daughter’s Christmas pictures every year on her birthday (she’s only had two so far so it’s been easy to keep that “tradition”) :)

Carrying on a long time tradition, I do Christmas Breakfast photos of everyone who attends our Annual Christmas Breakfast. We have anywhere from 30-50 neighbors, friends and family who come for waffles , link sausages, strawberries and whipcream every year and are on our 4th generation of attendees. My family has been providing breakfast this since the late 1950’s . We have a hand bound guest book for our visitors to sign and then we add their Christmas Picture to the book. We also have a Christmas scrapbook showing Christmas breakfast guests from the 1950’s through 2010.

Much to my teenager’s protests, I attempt to take pictures in September, for back
to school photos, then we again attempt to do a family photo at Christmas by
balancing my camera on a stack of boxes and get a timed shot! I really think
I should just break down and have a photographer take our family photo at some time!!LOL
Also, take a picture of our Christmas tree, be it a Charlie Brown tree, or something
    pretty nifty!
Thanks for the chance to win this incredible prize package and I will be downloading
the free page layout instructions…..of course it would be much easier if you could
just mail me the layout…just sayin’,,,, LOL
    Have a great Christmas!! :)

We read the scripture of the birth every year. We give gifts, too. My favorites are those made from their heart. We never give expensive gifts…that puts a burden on those that don’t have money. It is about the heart!

We buy a dated Christmas ornament each year from our favourite craft sale in November, and put it on the tree when we put it up on December 1st, front and center, and take our photo with us beside the year dated ornament. The kids get to pick the ornament out each year, and as we decorate the tree they say “I picked that one”, or as kids will be kids, “I hate that one”.

well normally it’s a pic in front of the tree of our dogs and my brother but this is the first year we haven’t put up our tree. Our beautiful tree with over 1,000 lights on it was just to be for our condo so I gave it to a friend who will cherish it along with almost all the ornaments. Kept a few for the memories. We have our other decorations out but it’s not the same.

My most precious photo tradition is one we do each summer since our daughter was born and it’s of her and her dad walking toward the beach hand in hand. She is eight now and it’s so fun to see how tall she is getting and to look at the progression of each year. I will continue this until she gets married so I can have a slide show of all these pictures of her and her dad walking hand in hand and I want the last one to be of them walking down the aisle when she gets married.

I saw a post on FB the other day of 2 brothers that did just that for 34 years and asked my oldest son (nearly 4) if he and his brother could do that for me and he thought about it and said Yes Mumma. And baby wants to too, bless him 😀
