Handmade Holidays: Pocket Tags

Hi, Danielle here with an inexpensive project that would be a great gift for a friend, neighbor or coworker! I made a vellum pocket with 4 gift tags tucked inside using the Snow Village collection.

Christmas Joy Pocket with set of tags2

When creating the tags, I kept them rather simple and left room on them to write “to/from”. The two bottom tags in the photo below are just trimmed out from the journaling cards in the Gingerbread Man paper. You can leave them as is, or you can add a few embellishments to them, like I did with the canvas deer and berries stickers! The canvas stickers are such a quick way to add some pizzazz and texture to your project, just peel and stick! The other two tags are simply trimmed from the blue polka dot paper. Again, I simply added stickers, die cuts and chipboard over the top. Peel and stick, and you’re done!

Here is what the vellum pocket looks like without the tags.

canvas pocket - decorated

To make the pocket, I cut two pieces of vellum with Papertrey Ink’s Front & Center die. This is a 5 x 7″ die. I trimmed one of the pieces down to create the front of the pocket.

Step1 cut vellum pocket

Next, I machine stitched the two pieces together on the sides and bottom, leaving the top open to allow the tags to slide into the pocket. If you don’t sew, you can adhere the sides and bottom with vellum adhesive.

Using the Snow Village stamps, I stamped “Christmas” and “Joy” with Versamark Ink onto the front. Then the stamped image is heat embossed with gold embossing powder. Gold accents seem to be so hot right now!

Step 2 stitch pocket stamp and emboss with gold

Last, I dressed up the top edge of the pocket with a canvas sticker. There are so many cute canvas pieces in this package, as you can see in the photo below. Twine was wrapped around the pocket twice and then tied in a bow, and I added an Artisan chipboard star, another canvas snowflake sticker onto the star and a resin flourish. A few pieces of star confetti finish off the design.

Step3 dress up front of pocket with canvas twine and chip star - 500px

Finished, this project looks as if you spent so much time on it! The recipient will be wowed!

I would say I only craft about 25% of tags I use. There are several reasons for this- time and the recipient (I usually don’t make tags for young children because they’re more interested in the gift)! Perhaps if I kept some tags on hand, I would use them! I have been LOVING this Handmade Holiday!! It’s been so fun and I’ve loved every lesson and every generous download! Not to mention that I can not resist “Snow Village”. Thank you so much PP.

Make all my own tags, consider them each to be a mini card. Also share them with friends and family, can’t wait to make this tag pocket, will be in the scrap room tonight. Thank you for the great ideas.

The answer is yes. I love crafting my gift tags. It’s so much fun to customize the tag for the recipient as well as to compliment the gift. It’s also a great way to use up odds and ends from all sorts of Xmas paper collections so that I can purchase (or win) some of the new paper each year. Thanks for the chance to win your fabulous Snow Village collection and for all the great project ideas from the DT.

No I don’t usually make tags although did take part in a tag swap so that covered it for me this year. :)

These pocket tags are so fun! I give a lot of gift cards so these would be perfect! And yes, I always make my own gift tags every year. It’s a quick and easy project!

    December 12, 2013 - 5:53 am

I always make some of my gift tags. I was pleased to see that my daughter had saved all the gift tags from last Christmas to reuse again on their gifts this year.

  • Debbie F
    December 12, 2013 - 5:56 am

I don’t use gift tags very often – since my granddaughters learned to spell their names so they can’t snoop. I do the same with the big kids. My children’s gifts are in bags so if I don’t remember, I can peek. The granddaughters each get a different wrapping paper so I can keep track and I put a small initial somewhere on the package.

Can honestly say ‘half in half’ – because for those who would notice handmade tags – yes, and for those…for instance teenage boys in our family wouldn’t even probably read a tag (lol) – perhaps not.
But I do love making them!

I make ornaments but not tags. Based on these , I really should try my own.

  • Melanie
    December 12, 2013 - 7:03 am

Yes, I do make my own tags!! We are a family of 6, and there is NO room on a store bought tag to write all of our names, lol Mine are simple, mass produced (by me!!) but I love them!!

  • Bethany Becker
    December 12, 2013 - 7:07 am

I have not made tags for gifts. However looking at these examples, I just might give it a try

Nope. Always buy at walmart or dollar store since they just get thrown away.

  • Debbie Siddle
    December 12, 2013 - 7:30 am

Sometimes, but it depends if I have the time. I’ve made tags from recycled old cards before, but usually from scratch.

  • Saundra Fitzgerald
    December 12, 2013 - 7:32 am

I have not made gift tags in years! and I do not even know why I stopped making them. I love the “specialness” they add to gifts! I really need to get better at crafting my special touches during the holidays, it always made me feel so much better.
Thanks for a chance to win!!

  • Shawn Wenrich
    December 12, 2013 - 7:32 am

Yes, but not all of them, i usually try to do something special for my team at work and tags take a little less time. Love this project Danielle, stunning!

  • Saundra L Fitzgerald
    December 12, 2013 - 7:36 am

I have not made gift tags in years, and I do not even know why I have gotten out of the habit of crafting all those little specials touches that truly make the holidays special for friends and family.
Thanks for a chance to win!!..

P.S…… I started making tags as I responded to this post…haha..nothing like a good push of inspiration!!

    December 12, 2013 - 8:44 am

I have never made a handmade gift tag, but yours looks so amazing! I have boys so they would not be interested in sweet looking tags. They just want to rip open the package :o).

  • Dawn Skene
    December 12, 2013 - 8:46 am

Yes, I make my own gift tags. I save my Christmas cards and use some of the images from them on my tags. Then I use my stamps and embellishments to finish them off.

  • Lena Hillbrand
    December 12, 2013 - 8:46 am

I have, but after all the work I put into them, I usually can’t bear to part with them! They usually end up in my projects instead of on gift bags that get thrown out right away.

  • Kim Lennard
    December 12, 2013 - 8:49 am

Not usually, unless I run out. While I would love doing it, most of my family wouldn’t notice or would just say, “Oh, that’s pretty” and then they would be in the trash. I work so hard crafting and scrapping, I can’t bear to see that happen. And then there’s the time and cost down the drain too.

  • Gina
    December 12, 2013 - 8:55 am

I do both. Sometimes if I have time I’ll do my own tags but it’s so much easier to use purchased ones. Or if I run out, there are always plenty of supplies to create a quick tag.

  • April W
    December 12, 2013 - 9:02 am

I’ve done a few in the past but I mostly use the store-bought ones because it’s so much easier during a busy time of the year. 😉

    December 12, 2013 - 9:19 am

Depending on my time schedule as to when I make my own tags.If I have the time I most certainly do , but if not them I rely on those I already have on hand.

  • melissa rhodes
    December 12, 2013 - 9:23 am

I usually do not but last year I made them to go along with a handmade gift for most of the family. These tags inspire me to do them again this year!

  • Kate
    December 12, 2013 - 9:52 am

I always make my own gift tags. Some years it is as simple as printing out my own tags. If more time is available, then the embellishments start to appear!
Thanks for the chance to win this great package.

    December 12, 2013 - 11:07 am

Sometimes, yes …. sometimes, no. Too often tags get lost in all of the other confusion … particularly by people who “don’t appreciate” the handcrafted nature of some things.
