Hello again! It’s Ashley and I’m back with a new layout for you today! Mixed media can be an intimidating technique, but it doesn’t have to be. There are so many ways you can incorporate mixed media into your layouts and projects. Several ideas include spray mist, modeling paste, Gelatos, acrylic paint, or watercolor paint. I find that adding watercolors to a layout is one of my favorite ways to used mixed media. It’s a simple medium to work with. You can use it directly on your layout, or if that’s too scary, try painting die cuts or embellishments separately and then adding them to your layout. For this layout, I decided to paint over a large die cut and coordinate my watercolors with the colors in the Fancy Free collection.
I used a cut and fold design and cut it on my Silhouette Cameo from white cardstock. This allowed me to fold over the die cut pieces to show the watercolor I added to the backside. Starting out, I left the die cut pieces unfolded and painted first, this helped not to get any of the watercolor on the front side of my layout. Once the watercolor paint dried, I folded each of the half cut circles over, to reveal the painted side.
I coordinated the watercolors to the patterned papers in the Fancy Free collection. I wanted a mix of mixed media and patterned paper on this layout so I used my 2 inch circle punch to punch out the fun circles from the Fancy Free patterned paper. To help keep the half circles folded on the layout, I added machine stitching across each row. Then I wanted to balance the stitching from the top onto the bottom of the layout. I hand-stitched around each of the punched patterned paper circles at the bottom of the layout and love the added texture it brought to the layout.
I chose a black & white photo for the layout and layered my title and embellishments close to the photo. I love the clustered feel it creates on the page and it also keeps a lot of the background work from being covered. I wanted the watercolors to the be the focus at the top of the page so I added most of my other embellishments below the die cut circles. And I really didn’t need to add a whole lot of extras to this layout because the watercolors mixed with the patterned paper circles are so eye-catching!
If you’re contemplating using mixed media on your next layout or project, I hope I’ve given you some ideas to try out. Once you give it a try, I think you’ll be hooked!
