With our theme this week being triangles, I put my thinking cap on to come up with a fun project… and then it came to me! Triangles = banners! And with a couple of birthdays and other occasions coming up, today I bring to you a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a mini banner perfect to adorn a cake for any occasion!
Now this seemingly simple project is made a lot easier with my tutorial below! In other words, I made a few small mistakes so you don’t have to! So let’s get to it:
Step 1: Gather all your supplies. I used the 6×6” paper pad from the Fancy Free collection, hot glue gun, twine, scissors, wooden skewers, and a small banner flag die that I have (this is optional – you could just hand cut them!)
Step 2: Die cut or cut a bunch of flags from your patterned paper. I have found it’s best to cut a “double” flag that you can fold in the centre over the twine. This is MUCH easier to adhere to your twine than just a single front flag in my opinion. I’m lucky enough to have this die in my stash, but you could easily cut them by hand.
Step 3: The next thing to do is to attach your twine to two wooden skewers. I first tie it on (leaving roughly as much length as you need for your cake diameter) and then reinforce it by adding a dob of hot glue to the knot; that way you know it’s not going to fall off!
Step 4: It’s time to adhere your die cut flags to the twine! I lay them out first to get the spacing right and then adhere them. I use hot glue for this also for ease and durability.
Step 5: Now you can embellish! I’ve added buttons with a twine bow to the banner ends. You can use ribbon, you can add die cuts or flowers or any of your embellishments!
Finally, pop your banner into your cake! If it’s too tall, simply cut your wooden skewers down a little with scissors.
Such a cute look using supplies you probably already have on hand! Thank you so much for stopping by the Pink Paislee blog today!
