Every New Year I am faced with the opportunity of a year of story right in front of me. For years now, I have attempted to remain faithful to a Family Life Album. This album is filled with weekly tellings of the stories found in and outside our four walls. Some years I have done beautifully well. Some years…well? Not so much. While reviewing past albums and seeing the holes of story, it saddens me I missed those. Because I don’t want to miss a thing.
Today I want to share tips and ideas and about a family life album, and more specifically, why a title page to start the album off.
1. Because time.
Every family album of mine always starts with photos, of course. The very first page, what I call a title page, is home to our most recent family photoshoot. This page holds the family portrait as well as each child’s portrait from that year. This is our history. This is who we are right now. To me this is the most important page of the album.
This page utilizes a photo template that fits the 3×4 pocket. I will include that HERE for your use. This allowed me to fit 4 photos in one pocket. And then the rest fit on the half of another template.
2. Because story.
Another part of this year’s title page is a little introspection of my thoughts and hopes and wishes. A telling of right now as well as of what the year will hold.
As some of this journaling is a bit on the private side I wanted to utilize hidden journaling. I typed my thoughts out on my computer, then printed and trimmed to 6×4-inches. This piece slips into the pocket page.
3. Because memory.
The title page is inspired mostly by our family photoshoot. Now some tips and ideas for this, because this can overwhelm if you let it. I have been all over the map on how our photos come to reality. We have had someone snap us up real quick in our backyard. I have hired a friend. I have hired a professional. Even a vacation photo from that previous year works great for this page.
One other thing to note on this point, if you have more than one child, get those siblings together and in a photo! If your kids are like mine, life is not always harmonious. This is why we take beautiful photos of our children… to help us remember the good! But this is for them too. A sibling photo is an important part of their memory and saving them to a Family Life Album title page is a good idea.
4. Because pretty.
Let’s be honest, I have boxes of photos in my home. Even photos simply slipped into albums just on their own, no embellishment. But you know what? No one looks at those. True story. This is why I take the extra effort to make my albums attractive on purpose. I want them to be looked at for goodness sake.
Here’s some ideas and tips for embellishing a title pocket page.
*Of course photos are needed. Hope I covered that well above.
* Use a scrapbook collection. A single collection can help expedite the process. I used Pink Paislee’s Moonstruck here as I wanted to stay with the blues and gold touches from the collection. It just made the page come together so easy.
* Use tags to fill holes. Don’t feel like you have to fill up a whole pocket. Ephemera tags that don’t fill the whole space is OK. I needed to fill where the photo did not fit. I like this tag and the pretty it adds to my page.
Tags and die cuts are obvious great choices for the pockets. Make sure they support the story you are attempting to tell. More on that point in a second. If an element is too big for a pocket, it’s OK to adhere it to the outside of the pocket. I do this all the time.
And lastly a reason for a family life album title page…
5. Because inspiration.
One other tip I want to share is how this page can be a point of inspiration for you and yours. I was so excited to discover this Shine Bright die cut mixed in with the Ephemera. That phrase is one I tell my kids still at home as they walk out the door for school. Every day my hope for them is to Shine Bright whatever the situation. To have this as an embellishment on our year’s album title page is bonus!!! There are certain things I hope my kids never forget I say, and this would be one of them.
Five reasons for including a title page for a Family Life Album. Lots of additional tips found within each reason to help create this important first page. Many pages of memory to follow that will be the story of your life. Happy New Year and may you dream big and beautiful dreams and stories.
