Hey everyone, it’s Raquel here today sharing a tutorial with you all featuring the new and amazing Oh My Heart collection. I am a list person, and truth be told, I am constantly working from ‘to do’ lists that seem to never end! This year, in 2017, we have a big year for our little family. Our daughter is starting kindy, my son will be continuing playgroup, hubby continuing to work 6 days a week and I am returning to primary teaching on a part time basis. Exciting! But busy. So to help me contain those numerous ‘to do’ post its I write and lists all around the house I decided to create a midori insert that could contain all my lists in the one spot. Plus, being the standard midori size, I’m able to pop it into my handbag or work bag if I go out.
Here is the completed project:
Let’s get into how this came together. Firstly, I trimmed the paper to size. I used white copy paper for the insert pages, these were trimmed to 22cm wide x 21cm high. I also cut one of my favourite papers from the Oh My Heart collection: Paper 12. I absolutely adore this paper and it was just perfect for the cover as it contains so many beautiful patterns and colours.
Once the papers and cover are cut to size they need to be folded in half. You can use your fingers to press along the fold like I have, or a scoring tool if you have one in your stash.
I then popped the paper inserts within the cover. It looks so pretty already and it isn’t even secured together or finished yet!
Our next step is to secure the insert together, so you will need a paper piercer, some thread (embroidery or crochet thread is perfect) and a needle with a head large enough to fit the thread through. Pierce 5 holes in the insert, one in the center, and two to each side of the center hole, spaced evenly.
From the inside, thread the needle through the centre hole to the outer cover. Leave approx a 3″ piece hanging as you will use this to secure all the pieces at the end (see image below).
Then you need to sew from the outside back inside through the next hole, either on the left or the right. Once you have done that sew from the inside to the final hole on the side you have chosen. Now, your needle should be on the outside of the insert. You now need to sew back through the previous hole to the inside of the book and then back out to the outside via the center hole. Clear as mud? There are a few tutorials on YouTube if you get stuck.
Repeat the stitching to the other side, until all holes have been stitched and the book is secure together. Your last stitch should bring the needle and thread to the inside of the insert. To finish, pull the threads tight then tie a double knot with the two pieces of thread to secure. Trim off the excess thread.
Golly I am so in love with this cover!
My next step was to gather all my goodies ready to work in my insert and create my first little ‘to do’ and reminder page.
The stamps from the Oh My Heart collection are the perfect accompaniment to a project like this. I love that I am able to stamp as much or as little as I need.
Here is the finished page, complete with the help of the ephemera, stamps, some of the cut apart patterned papers, the washi, and of course all my notes!
I just love how this turned out and I hope this tutorial helps you to create your own inserts at home!
