Ampersands are without a doubt a very loved design in the craft world. They can be used in so many ways, big or small, light or bold, simple or decorative, the sky is the limit. Today I’m gonna show you a fun way to use them as the main design element of your page.
First thing I did was to find a very simple font and print an oversized ampersand. I placed the design on top of my cardstock base and I poked holes all around the edges to create a stitching template. Then I used some yellow embroidery thread and I stitched every other hole to create a dash effect. To help my ampersand pop from the background, I added a few light brush strokes of gesso to fill the shape.
When that was dry, I got a package of the gorgeous Oh My Heart Thickers and I started filling my ampersand with random letters and numbers. This Thickers set is ideal because it includes so many different colors and patterns giving a very unique and whimsical look.
This is a perfect technique to make use of those extra letters that you have when you are done with your vowels. You can even mix different sets of Thickers to create fun combinations.
I didn’t really want to over-embellish this page and steal the spotlight from the beautiful ampersand design so I just added a small cluster on the top and a few pieces around my photo to help it pop.
It’s a really fun technique and you should give it a go! You can even experiment with different shapes and designs!
