Hey howdy hey Paige Evans here today kicking off Ampersands week! Although not technically a “shape”, I love the way ampersands look and they are such a versatile symbol that look great as is or in place of the word “and”.
On this layout I used a combination of so many of my favorite things: lots of patterned paper, machine stitching, watercolors, a big focal point shape in the background, die cutting with my Silhouette Cameo, and a smattering of flowers and hearts. All my faves wrapped into one!
I was trying to think of where to begin and saw a project on the wall I made a couple years ago for Big Picture Classes of layered paper hearts and thought I could translate the same idea using ampersands and without foam tape between all the layers.
I used my Silhouette Cameo and an ampersand cut file that I offset 6 times to create each slightly larger layer. Then I die cut each ampersand from a different patterned paper from my Oh My Heart collection, except the first and one which I cut from smooth white cardstock. I did originally cut it from patterned paper but it was too busy so I switched it out.
Next I used a sewing machine and stitched around the edges of each ampersand – I love the texture this adds and it helps define each shape so they don’t get lost among all the color.
On a textured white cardstock background I traced the layered ampersands and then used the packaging technique with watercolors to smudge color around the outline. Once it was dry I adhered the ampersand in place then went to town finishing up the layout with a photo, title, journaling, and embellishments – all from Oh My Heart.
I hope you are inspired to use ampersands in a big way on your next project! Stay tuned for some amazing projects by the design team this week!
