Appreciate your Mum {lovely layers}

I had this lovely photo of me, my Mum and my son from a visit last year, and I thought it would be nice to do a layout about how much more I appreciate all that my wonderful Mum did for me when I was growing up now that I am a Mum myself (… and yes, I am 100% Australian – so it is Mum here in Downunder!)

The bright colors of the photo were just perfect to use with the Spring Jubilee range.

I love the collage cards and started my layout by selecting two to join and use as a mat behind my photo.  I decided to then layer various patterned papers behind the collage cards and the layout quickly fell into place.

To ground the layout, I added various black elements by inking the Mistables letters, including a black collage sheet from the London Market range, using some black twine on the shipping tag and mounting the whole layout onto a sheet of black cardstock which just peeps through the distressed edges of the patterned paper background.

What are you doing this Mother’s Day to celebrate a Mother in your life?

Material Mix {Prairie Bleu?}

Hi, Kim here sharing with you my take on mixing up two different Pink Paislee lines.  While there is no doubt that the products within each Pink Paislee range work perfectly together, it is also true that the products from different ranges can be mixed and matched easily to make the most effective use of your stash.

In this layout, I have used a combination of Prairie Hill and Indigo Bleu – my two favourite ranges from the recent release … something to do with being a mum of a boy I think!

I have used strips of paper from both ranges on the left side.

Then a mix of embellishments including the tag, border sticker, chat cloud and bitty blocks from Indigo Bleu and the element and accolade stickers from Prairie Hill.  I think that the two ranges work so well together, especially on a neutral background, such as inked kraft cardstock.

A great way to tie together different ranges is to use a unifying element. In this layout, I have hand-drawn lines around each of the patterned paper strips.

If you normally only use one range when scrapping a layout, have a go at mixing it up.  I am sure that you will love the end result.

Technique Week {Simple tricks to make your layouts shine!}

Hi Kim here!  When I was asked to prepare a layout and share a technique with you all, I gave a lot of thought to what I should share and I ended up making a layout using several simple techniques.  I then couldn’t decide which one to focus on, so I am going to share them all.  All of these techniques are simple, but I think they are effective – I hope you agree!  This is my layout …

Now to run you through the techniques that I have used.

The first is using a mistables fuzzy sticker to create a background for the beautiful seahorse.  I thought the fuzzy sticker looked a lot like seaweed and so I decided to incorporate it into the layout to ground my seahorse.  I have lightly inked the fuzzy sticker with brown ink.  By layering it over the misted background paper, it makes it a subtle addition to the layout, but I think it also looks like it has been created by using a mask, rather than a separate sticker.

The second technique is using trading cards to create a grid with smaller sized photos.  Sometimes it can be a challenge to use a full pack of trading cards and this technique can allow you to maximise the use of your stash.  The trading cards also add to the story I have documented as they describe the types of activities that we undertook on our walk by the sea.

The final technique is the handcut banner that is below the photo / trading card grid.  I simply cut a variety of different sized rectangles from the Nantucket papers and then cut notches in one end of each rectangle to create pennants.  I then attached them to the layout using glue at only the top edge.  You can lightly draw a pencil line for your banner, but you can just lay the pennant pieces down roughly where you want the banner to sit.  I then lightly curl up the bottom edges of the pennants to add dimension.  I then put a brad in at the end of the banner and tie some twine around it to finish.  You can do this at both ends, or just one – it depends where your banner sits on your page.

I hope you found these techniques useful and you are able to incorporate them onto one of your layouts in the near future.

Epiphany Crafts Blog Hop: Day 4

Hi, this is Kim Arnold here today!

The Epiphany Crafts products were so much fun to play with! What makes them so great is that because you can add you own paper to them, they can go with any layout that you want. This makes them so flexible and a great addition to your scrappy stash.

For my layout, I have used the beautiful silver setting with the scallop edge to add that extra bit of detail to the “o” in my title. It was so easy to add my choice of the yellow paper behind the bubble cap to create exactly the look I was after.

I have also used the little hanging settings to add my initial and age to hang below the ribbon knot. I used the Pink Paislee Bitty Blocks along with patterned paper under the bubble caps and it worked perfectly! I love the extra personalisation that this adds to my layout. Again, super easy to achieve with the Epiphany Crafts tools.

Don’t forget to leave a comment EACH day here on our blog for your chance to win. Also visit Epiphany Crafts to see more fun projects!
