Top Trends {Ombre With Bold Colors}

Hi there..

Mahlin here today with my thoughts on the Ombre trend.  You´ve seen Janna and Piradee takes on Ombre earlier this week, so I bet you already have a pretty good sense of how awesome the Mistables collection is to make this trend come to life in your scrapbooking.

As I have such a crush on bold colors, I tend to play alot with mistables and paint of all sorts, and the thing I always try to master is the graduation of it all, since it tends to get too heavy on the design if I use all bold colors. Blending the color, having it fade in or out, or graduating it in and out is such a beautiful effect.

On my layout, I used strong warm orange, letting it pour out into a soft yellow, the colors graduating within the neighboring color. I also wanted to use some hot pink, so I used a Mistables paper as a background, letting the mist air dry in between layers of misting, also I held the bottle from different angles and distances to make the hot pink graduate in the background.  Then I added some gesso for more white areas.

Here is a closer look on the graduation of the orange -> yellow on my flowers. I think I used about 5 different brands of mist to get different shades of these colors.

Adding some layering on top, everything doesn´t have to be OMBRE to be trendy, mix it up how you like it.

You should not be afraid to mix up different collections, especially not Pink Paislee, since they go so well together.  I have mixed everything from mistables to Spring Jubilee and London Market. Play with it and have fun!

Hot Products {Day 4: Prairie Hill}

Hello everyone!

This is Mahlin, coming to you today to show off some really cute embellishments from the Pink Paislee Collection, Prairie Hill. We are featuring the Chipboard Pops and Accolade Stickers.

Working with circles and dots of all sorts is a fun way to vary your balance and create paths for the eye to follow.  For this layout, I made a soft diagonal wave across my layout, using mostly Chipboard Pops, but also some deconstructed Accolade Stickers.

My wave of Pops starts, not all the way down in the left corner, but a few inches up, working it´s way in a soft diagonal up, but not all the way up to the right corner.  The two main things on my mind when placing the Pops was to make the wave look soft and to vary the pop-patterns along the way. I didn’t want the same pattern to close to each other, my feeling was it would get to heavy for the eye, and I would loose the softness.

Amongst my photos I had a photo that I thought matched both the softness the wave created and the great muted colors of Prairie Hill, so I wasn´t afraid to add some pops directly on top of the photo.

I decided to take my Accolade Stickers apart. I just wanted the bigger circles and not the paper ribbons or words.  But they can always be used in another way, on a card or as embellishments on another layout, so I took it apart very carefully.  To match the Accolade with the pops even more and to make it one with the wave, I added a Chipboard Pop on top of my deconstructed Accolade Sticker to balance them together.

Technique Week {Masks}

Hey everyone! Mahlin here today to share some tips on using Pink Paislee and masks.  I love to add color and texture to my pages, and I am always on the lookout for fun ways of doing this.  There are masks ready to use, like Mistables misting mask or the She art  Vintage doily Mask.  But you can also make your own with what you have at home.

I adore the pattern from the hexagon pieces in Nantuckets Chipboard tiles and wanted to make my own mask out of it. I carefully removed all the tiles, leaving the  left over frame for me to play with.  I covered some of the holes with masking tape, thinking it would leave some negative space for the balance of the design.

Since the mask is quite narrow, I had to cover  with scrap paper on the sides spraying, lifting it moving it sideways along my background until I was pleased with the result.

Adding just a thin layer of gesso will leave the underlaying colors and pattern to show through.

Adding some more texture to my background I used Pink Paislees misting mask and gesso. If you use a thick layer of  gesso, it gets more of a modeling paste effect. A lot of exciting texture.  I place my mask and use an old plastic card to apply my Gesso, lifting the mask very carefully. You can see Mona doing a similar thing using molding paste in this post.

When all this has dried, I  go over my background with some mist yet again and then taking a baby wipe to remove the color from the raised parts of the gesso pattern.

Now I can start adding my pattern paper, embellishments and photo.  I worked with lots of layering and torn edges.

I like to attach my ribbons and trims with my sewing machine, adding some extra stitches just because I like the look.

Circles create a movement in the design that really catches my eye, so I use circles a lot.

Epiphany Crafts Blog Hop: Day 5

Hi, this is Mahlin on our last day of the Epiphany Crafts blog hop. I hope you have found many ideas to try this week! I have a layout for you today called “The Love of Dance”.

To make the background of my layout, I added mists and gesso to it. I like fun, vibrant colors! I used three different mists on my background, which is a paper from the Mistables paper pack. I don’t plan on where each color goes, I rather spray randomly trying to space the different colors somewhat evenly. Even if I like my colors bright, it can sometimes be to much, the patterned paper blends in too much. Then I use white gesso, which is a kind of primer in art, you could just as well use white acrylic paint. I use a plastic card to spread out my gesso. I try to cover the background where I´ll be placing the rest of the patterned papers, so there’s a natural color to divide the background from the focal point (in this layout, being the layered papers, and photo). On this layout, I also chose to spread my gesso a bit diagonal, since it helps balance my design.

I used my Epiphany craft tool to make some cute accessories on my layout. First, I used I this tool to make a cut out from the pink patterned paper to enhance the pattern. Isn’t it lovely?

I thought the paper rosettes needed some standing out so I took some gorgeous Pink Paislee pink paper, made a bubble cap and added it on top of the pattern to make it match.

I also wanted some circles to my design..adding both chipboard pops from Pink Paislee and matching it up with 14 bubble caps from Epiphany crafts. I then covered these in white mist.

Because I use smaller photos, I wanted to emphasize it by using a bubble cap on the same photo but in color and picking out the details of the feet.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on each day’s post this week for more chances to win! A winner will be announced tomorrow!
