Back to School Cool {Locker Pockets!}

It’s almost back to school time, hard to believe that summer has passed so quickly once again.  School supplies, new shoes, lunch boxes, and backpacks are taking up my entire dining room table!

My oldest daughter will be starting middle school this year, and with that she will get a locker that she feels needs to be personalized in a major way.  So last week I went online searching for school projects that would be “cool” enough in her eyes to grace her locker :)   I came across a project on the Family Fun website for a “locker pocket.”  It was fun, simple, and I knew exactly how I wanted to create one just for her!  Below are the instructions for duplicating this project from Family Fun.

Here are the supplies you will need to create one:

Resist paper (Pink Paislee Mistables)

Distress Inks in varying colors

Paint

Jewels

Different geometric shapes (I used a tag, canvas flower, mistable stickers, and a wooden butterfly)

A brad

Glue and tape

Strong magnets

First I used Spiced Marmalade distress ink on the paper from the Pink Paislee mistable line. I cut a 9″ square from the paper for my base.

Place the square on a flat surface and fold the 2 opposite corners to the center, as shown in the picture below. Fold up the lower corner so the edges slightly overlap the side flaps. While pinching the 3 folded flaps together with one hand, secure them from the inside of the pocket with packing tape.

Apply glue between the overlapped edges and place a heavy book on top of the envelope to keep them flat while they’re drying.

Once dried, apply your magnets to the back.

Then get your embellishments ready for the front.

Here are details of the embellishments minus the tag:

For the yellow starburst I used a Fuzzy Sticker from the Pink Paislee mistables line and inked it with Scattered Straw distress ink.  I then used a large yellow Bazzill brad for the center.  The brad is what will anchor everything down the pocket.

I then attached to a canvas flower that I sprayed with Cherry Metallic Mist from Maya Road.

I painted the wooden butterfly with Organic Garden Glimmer Glam from Tattered Angels.  I love it because it has hints of glitter in it :)

Layer all your embellishments.  I poked a hole in the center of the pocket to slip my brad through to really hold everything together.  The tag was distressed with Tim Holtz distress ink in Broken China.

Your child can use the pockets to hold school supplies, cds, lunch money, important school papers….the list is endless.

When my daughter saw the end project her eyes lit up.  Now my other two (who don’t even have lockers) want me to make one for them :)   Of course I agreed!  This is a project I can see myself making year after year.  You can add so much personality to each one too.  Try adding their names, the school year, or a fun saying to the front.  The possibilities are endless!

I would love to see your ideas.  Feel free to post a link here to your fun and crafty back to school “locker pockets!”

Star Studded Birthday! {Creating With the Cricut}

Good morning everyone!

Do you ever go to the store, looking for the perfect card, and leave disappointed and empty handed?  Well I have a solution for you!  Cricut makes a cartridge called “Wild Card” and it is full of templates for unique cards, envelopes, frames, icons, and alphabets perfect for any type of card you need to make!

Since my sister’s birthday falls on the 4th of July, I thought it would be fun to make her a “star” themed birthday card and matching gift card holder.  She is very crafty herself, so I knew she would appreciate the extra work :)

With my Cricut Expressions machine, I cut my card out using the “star” card template, black out, using 6″ dimension.  I wanted to use light colored paper so I could mist it.  I used the Neighborhood Pool paper from Hometown Summer.  After cutting out the image, I folded the star over exposing the other side of Neighborhood Pool.

I then used the “frame” option for the star card.  It cut out a perfect outline of the star.  I used the Heat Wave paper from Hometown Summer. I felt as though the card needed something extra to make it pop so I backed the Neighborhood Pool paper with the Tabs paper from Daily Junque.

Opening the card up, I sprayed the inside with Dark Denim glimmer mist from Tattered Angels, and Cherry Metallic mist from Maya Road.  It reminds me of firework explosions!

After the mist dried, I added her name to the front and dotted the “i” with a chipboard pop from Hometown Summer.  The “icon” button on the Wild Card cartridge has so many fun options.  I love the extra big quotation marks.  I raised them on pop dots for dimension.

I’ve never made a gift card holder.  Ever.  I am learning so much with the Cricut machine, I really am a newbie!!  To make the envelope, I had to hit the “shift” key on the key pad, it then gave me the option to choose what envelope I wanted.  Again, I went with the “stars” theme.  I printed it out on the Tab paper from Daily Junque.  I folded the envelope, then added the star I popped out from my earlier card frame.

Next game the frame to hold my sentiment.  I used the “frame” option on the Cricut, from the stars collection.  With a little of the Neighborhood Pool paper I backed up the empty star shape so it would stand out.   This is what the front of the gift card holder looks like:

When I flipped the gift card over, I noticed that two star shapes cuts were made in the envelope.  I used the red star paper to back these so they stood out.  I like things in “3s” so I used a star punch to make a third star, raising it on a pop dot.  I added 2 brads and some twine to close the gift card up.

The Cricut is amazing.  There are so many options, so many things you can create with it.  I just wish I had one sooner!

Visual Symmetry {Using Four Photos}

When creating a layout, I often feel like my photos need to be in a line, grouped together, achieving a streamlined or symmetrical look.

After I printed out my four photos for this layout, I played around with the positions to see what I liked best.  Originally, I had the photos spaced out with a yellow block of paper (Summer Fun) between each photo.  Once again, I felt like everything needed to be even.  Well when doing that, I had little room for embellishments or extras around the photos.

So I put 3 photos in one corner, and 1 in the other.  I still have my symmetry (3 rectangles on top and 3 on bottom).

The Neighborhood Pool paper is the base for my layout.  I used cherry red mist from Maya Road.

I wanted to incorporate this banner from the Hometown Summer border stickers collection somewhere on my layout, and after playing around I decided to cut it up and only use the “day” in my title.  To attach it, I used my sewing machine.

Cutting apart the watermelon border, I made a fun design on the side of my layout!

To add something fun to the yellow blocks of patterned paper, I used my circle punch to cut shapes from the Fruit Stand paper.  I just love the watermelons!  A perfect accent for any summer layout.  I cut some of the circles apart and left some whole.  On the lower yellow block I sewed a straight line through each whole watermelon shape.

For my title, again, I sewed the flags to the paper, added some watermelon shapes from the Fruit Stand paper, the cherry and “summer vacation” are part of the Hometown Summer press-ons.  I finished off my title with Meringue cushies alphabet. I added the little girl with the popsicle, from the chipboard pops.

The scorecard punch out shape is so cute.  I used this to write each of the kids names from our zoo trip and made a check under the number innings to indicate how old they were when we went.

Using 4 photos on a layout can sometimes seem intimidating.  I like to make my photos 3 x 5.  They are much easier to manipulate into a design.

Have a great week!

Creating With The Cuttlebug + A Giveaway!

Good morning!
Before I get to the giveaway part, I want to take the time to share with you a layout I did featuring two of the Cuttlebug embossing folders.  This machine is so versatile, and adds that little touch of detail to give your layout or papercrafting project more texture and eye appeal.
First I started with the “D’Vine Swirl” embossing folder.  It almost gives a wave effect, perfect for those summer/water themed layouts.
Next, I embossed the Summer Fun paper from Hometown Summer.  Next, I punched several circles in varying sizes.
Then I used the star border embossing folder from the “Measure by Measure” border folders.  The borders are 7″ long.  I used the Neighborhood Pool paper from Hometown Summer.
Last, I hand cut several embossed stars from the paper to add as embellishments to my layout.
Here is the finished project:
And some detail shots:
The Cuttlebug is super easy to use.  I’ve incorporated it into almost all of my layouts since receiving it!
Now on to the fun giveaway!
