Meet Design Team Coordinator Danielle Flanders

And last, but not least, we have our new Design Team Coordinator for 2012, Danielle. She’s been a designer on our team for 4 years as a designer, and we’ve asked her to lead our new team for the year.

A little about Danielle:

Hi! I am originally a small town, midwest girl from South Dakota, but currently live in upstate New York with my husband of 13 years and my daughters, Taylor, age 12 and Kati, age 6. I have two degrees, one in Speech Therapy/Audiology and a teaching certificate in grades K-8. However, I’m happily staying home now, taking care of my family, and working for a few scrapbooking manufacturers in my spare time, making ART like I’ve always dreamed of!

About 4 years ago, I began blogging and creating for Pink Paislee. Since then, I’ve designed for several companies and have been published in many different magazines and idea books, and have taught scrapbooking classes around the United States. I love to share my ideas and passion for art!

How did you get started in paper crafting?

Like some of the others, I began when my first daughter was born 12 years ago. I really wanted to make a baby book for her and keep those memories fresh in my mind! It was such a special time for me, and I wanted to get it all down on paper.

What inspires you to create?

Inspiration really strikes me anywhere, anytime! Whether it’s a color combination I want to try, a new technique, a saying I’d like to use on a card, or even a fashion trend, I tend to look at everything and think…how can I use that in my paper crafting? New products always tend to inspire me as well, and I like to try and think of new uses for them.

Do you prefer layouts, altered projects, cards…or all of the above?

Lately, my passion seems to be cards and mini albums. The smaller palette is easier for me to work with.

How would you describe your style?

I think I might call my style “fresh vintage”. I love the look of older things like vintage book paper and girly elements, such as swirls and doilies. But I also love brighter colors to update the vintage look. “Modern meets vintage”, I guess you could say!

A fun fact about you?

I know how to work a few tools in my husband’s garage, including the table saw! We just finished putting hard wood floors in our house ourselves, and I cut all of the pieces myself for the floors while my husband nailed them in.

Any other hobbies?

A few years ago, I learned how to make quilts through a community class that I took, and I just love it!  I’ve always been a drawer and painter as well. I used to cut my own shapes out of wood with a jig saw myself, paint them and sell them at craft fairs.

What is your favorite Pink Paislee product?

I am ridiculously in love with the Nantucket line. I love the colors. The Spool Buttons from the Vintage Vogue line are one of my favorite products as well!

Meet Creative Team Member Karola Witczak

We are excited to have Karola returning to our team for another year! Karola is from Poland. Please help me welcome her back!

A little about Karola:

My name is Karola Witczak. I am an absolutely addicted scrapbooking, mommy to Rose, wife to Martin, friend of our furry friends – Miki (the cat), Chili (the dog) and Julian (the bunny). We live in the  west part of Poland/Europe. I’m a little crazy woman, who is dedicated to my scrapbooking passion almost every day, for 7 years now. I am constantly trying to develop my passion – in different ways and stepping on different paths – from digital scrapbooking 6 years ago, to an intensive exploration of the intricacies of traditional scrapbooking, constantly learning and teaching others as a scrapbooking instructor. Currently, I am working as a freelance designer for a large group of scrapbooking companies, shops, projects, challenge blogs, sometimes I lead the workshops and sometimes I design products for scrapbooking – all of these activities gives me lots of joy and satisfaction. I am coffee and books lover, I’m a geek about thrillers and crime stores in the books and films. I’m also a rock girl, but I love jazz and bossanova too. I love live music, musicals, and I am dependent on buying jeans and sneakers.

I am so honored and unbelievably happy being a Pink Paislee DT member for the third year! It’s a huge pleasure to work with these fantastic products and such lovely and talented people! I hope this year I will be able to inspire you and encourage to create.

How did you get started in paper crafting?

7 1/2 years ago when I was pregnant, I was looking for inspiration for a “pregnancy memory book” on the Internet and I found a lots of inspiration! I was totally shocked to see lots of amazing handmade mini albums, layouts and cards! Unfortunately, then in Poland we did not have ANY scrapbooking supplies or any shops, so I started with cardstock and some recycled materials and… I loved to create my cards and albums. I was so happy, but a little frustrated with less professional tools and beautiful products, so I started digital scrapbooking for over a year until the time when I was able to save a lot of money to buy paper scrapbooking supplies from the USA. The beginning was hard, but very creative, I think.

What inspires you to create?

Actually it is difficult to define. I combine my fascination with color, material and form with keeping special memories about my daughter, because she is the main character of my projects. During the last year, I started scrapping more about myself, then I was inspired by my own thoughts, emotions and observations on what surrounding me. In terms of scrapbooking product – I like to say that when I have a piece of paper, I can create everything and this is true. From all of scrapbooking products, the paper, its pattern and color combo inspires me the most.

Do you prefer layouts, altered projects, cards…or all of the above?

I love to create every kind of form. Each of them gives me  different types of learning, training, inspiration and emotions. Layouts are a quick form about my memories and emotions. I love to arrange in a 12 x 12″ space. Mini albums are the highest level – love to put my stories on a few pages of a mini, especially because I can add a lot of pictures, which I can arrange creatively on my layouts. Altered objects are always a challenge for me (in a good way!), it’s a pure pleasure giving new life and a new look to things! And cards… I absolutely LOVE making cards, usually I try to make a new, interesting shape. I love square or rectangle cards, but these unusual shapes are my favorite. What else? Sometimes I like making ATC’s, art journal pages, mixed media experiments… there’s so much to discover in a paper crafting!

How would you describe your style?

Hard question! Always love hearing what people say about my work and they usually describe my style as romantic, soft, delicate, feminine, shabby chic and eclectic. I love the shabby chic style, but with something modern. Love layers, texture  and dimensions, muted and soft colors, and even if I have to do projects with dark or juicy colors, usually I add a few tricks to make the whole project lighter. My best friend says that even if I use black paper, I can turn it into a pale and soft design. However, I’m trying to learn new things and techniques. I like to experiment.

A fun fact about you?

I don’t know whether this is funny, but recently was reminded about time when I was 12 or 13 years old, together with my classmate we had a craft business. We created crocheted handbags and wallets and sold them to school friends. It was a very good business and this was my start in crafting. Unfortunately, my friend fell in love with one from the New Kids On The Block and she left me in our business, then I didn’t have fun continuing this. I started writing haiku poems and limericks. And after that trauma, I went back to crocheting 7 years ago when my daughter was born, and I’ve done a few hats and scarves for her.

Any other hobbies?

Yes!  I am totally addicted to reading. I read 3 – 4 books per a month. This is related to my another passion – criminology. When I was studying political science at the University, I started reading a lot about criminal policy and later I read a lot of political and medical crime thrillers.  Now I’m in love with Scandinavian crime stories. One of my resolutions for 2012 is back to sewing clothes. This was my huge passion over the years, as I have a degree in dressmaking and designing clothes. I wish I’d love to sew clothes again, as for now I sew only paper on my scrapbooking projects, LOL!

What is your favorite Pink Paislee product?

I love all of the Pink Paislee products! Very difficult to pick a favorite, but I think that the Parisian Anthology and Mistables collections are my favorites. The reason is easy: no one had invented such great products to color in different ways. From the last release, I love the Nantucket and Vintage Vogue papers (these colors!), and I always love alphabets – of any kind – wooden, Mistables, cushies or glittered Expressions alphas.

Here are some beautiful examples of Karola’s recent work with Pink Paislee:

Meet Creative Team Member Tamara Tripodi

Please help us welcome Tamara Tripodi to our new 2012 creative team!

A little about Tamara:

Hi, I’m Tamara! I live in beautiful Bear Valley Springs, CA with my hubby and three kiddos, ages 4, 6 and 8. I have two fur babies who love to ‘help’ me paper craft! They are always stealing buttons and ribbon!  I started paper crafting on October 2010 and have been non-stop ever since! I love to create anything 3D! Goodie boxes, bags, decorations, etc. I ahven’t been paper crafting very long, but I LOVE it and couldn’t imagine life without it anymore!

How did you get started in paper crafting?

I was flipping through channels last year and saw an HSN presentation of the Cricut Expression. I thought it looked cool and just ordered it not really knowing 100% what it did. Once it arrived I was ‘scared’ of it for a few months, then in October 2010 I got serious and have been non-stop ever since then!

What inspires you to create?

Everything! Seasons/Holidays and paper patterns/stickers play a lot into my ‘ideas’ A simple mustache sticker will inspire me to create a photo booth prop box full of mustaches!

Do you prefer layouts, altered projects, cards…or all of the above?

‘Altered’ for sure, althgouh I rarely ‘alter’ anything.. I create mostly everything 100% from paper alone and maybe some styrofoam and dowel rods here and there. If I want a stack of boxes to decorate, I don’t go out and buy them and Mod Podge them, I will cut and score my own or use SVG cutting files. I’m recently getting into card making, too!

How would you describe your style?

I have several ‘styles’, I think! I do love fun and cheerful, but I also like sweet and girlie with a ‘vintage’ feel! Again, depends on what paper I am working with!

Tell us a fun fact about you…

Me, my half brother and half sister all share the same birthday, February 16th.. How’s that for weird? lol. Or, maybe it’s cool if you like weird things? lol.

Any other hobbies?

Oh, yeah! I do a lot of ‘stuff’. I had a photography and digital card/album design business for several years, so I love photography and working with graphics and such. I also really enjoy sewing and have made oodles of adorable little girls’ dresses and skirts and I had a pretty busy Etsy shop for awhile! I make a lot of vintage inspired hair pretties with lace elastics, felt flowers, cabochons, etc. and I also really love baking! The list goes on, but those are some of my favorite things to do!

What is your favorite current Pink Paislee product?

Well, I am huge on embellishments and love the wide variety of pretty things to embellish with! So fun!

Tamara has a super cute altered pail and card for us today!
Thank you, Tamara. Please help me welcome her to the team! You can see more of her creative altered projects here on her blog: www.happylifecraftywife.com.

Cuttlebug Cards

With Father’s Day approaching quickly, I sat down today to create some quick cards for the Dads, uncles and grandfathers in my life. I was able to combine some of my Cuttlebug folders and the Daily Junque line to come up with this “grown-up” card.

I used the A2 Seeing Spots cuttlebug folder to add texture to the aqua patterned paper from the Daily Junque line. I used the ephemera packaging envelope for my little collection of words. A metal flag, wood letters and stacked buttons completes the sentiment.

Next I created a more whimsical ”kid” card. You can customize the number and gender of kids shown on the front.

This crazy dots card was created with the Cuttlebug Swiss Dots (pink ribbon) and Fanciful Labels (white label) folders. I mixed cool tones from the Hometown Summer and Daily Junque lines to create a gender neutral card just for Dad!

Today’s Tutorial: Patchwork Punches

I guess you could say I’m sort of a country girl at heart, drawn to patchwork quilts and things from time gone by! I love the homespun patchwork look and even loves how it looks in scrapbooking!  I grabbed several of my favorite punches and decided to try making my punches look like patchwork as well. It’s super simple!

I started out with a 1″ scalloped circle punch by Martha Stewart and punched several of the same punches out of all different Soiree Mini Notes and Labels. I cut them up and placed them back together again.

Then I added them to a card! You could also use larger ones to decorate your layouts. I made a card with these patchwork circles…

…and one with patchwork stars.

Notice I used up one of the Mini Notes here that I punched the circle out of! It’s popped up with pop dots and a Soiree sentiment is stamped inside. I used a Sweetness rub on under the Mini Note. Pin is from the Soiree Flags.

I decided I wanted to try this with a larger die cut using my Cricut machine.  The smaller pieces were a little difficult to work with. I cut several of this shape using the Provo Craft cartridge called “Accents Essentials Shapes Cartridge”. They were cut at 2 1/2 ” each using several Soiree papers and Daily Junque papers.

I placed a whole one and 2 halves on a piece of Parisian Anthology paper, then cut the others up into fours.

Next, I rearranged the pieces over the top and moved them around until it was pleasing to the eye with various colors and patterns. I tried to balance out the pinks, yellows and blues.

I adhered them down evenly, then machine stitched along the edges to make it look like a quilt.

I added a printed saying from my computer, “Hem your blessings with thankfulness” and a rub on heart from the Sweetness line.

Give this technique a try. You’ll love putting your punches and die cut machine to good use again!
