Four Photos: Slow Down

Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago, we went to a local park/zoo as a family. It was a sunny day and the kids ran around and had fun. By the time we were ready to leave the park, I felt grouchy and tired. I just wanted to get home.

But the kids were still having fun and they took their time walking out of the place. After a few steps, I realized they were falling behind and turned around to tell them to hurry up. What I saw was my six-year-old and my two-year-old holding hands and walking from one corner to another slowly and touching each of the painted footsteps on the ground. They were laughing with so much joy that it melted away my frustration and reminded me that magic of life is in these moments.

So I made a layout to remember and to thank them:

The title reads: Thank you for teaching me to slow down.  You make life worthwhile.

And the journaling says:

On this particular day, I was tired and ready to go back home and frustrated that you two were taking so long. But then I heard all your giggles and turned around to see you were holding hands and touching each dino footprint on the ground and laughing every single time. It’s moments like this that remind me I need to slow down and appreciate life more. Thank you, my boys.

I also wanted to take a moment to highlight something I mentioned a few months ago: I tend to take a lot of photos that show something happening in time. So within five minutes, I will take twenty shots. This is my way of showing motion through pictures. In the photos below, you can see my kids holding hands, stopping to notice a dino print, the little one pointing out another one, and finally, both of them touching it. You can almost feel the passage of time. Having several photos on your layout gives you the advantage of being able to create motion.

Thank you for letting me share my layout. I hope you share your multi-photo layouts with us in the Live Pink gallery!

Simple Stories: Focusing on Journaling

Hello, and happy fall to you! It makes it so much fun to scrap Halloween photos from past years when the leaves are falling and the weather is getting cool, like it is here in New York right now! The gorgeous fall colors outside my window are so inspiring to me.

Well, today I am focusing on journaling on layouts. This was a very hard challenge for me, because I would say journaling is my weakest attribute in scrapbooking. Sometimes it’s hard for me to think of what to say about my photos. Usually I just write dates and names. But…I thought of a story I wanted to share with you about some of our past Halloween pictures!

A couple of Halloweens ago when my youngest daughter Kati was 3 years old, Taylor, my older daughter, decided she wanted to be a vampire – you know, something SCARY. So we had found this cool bat-like costume and was going to do Taylor’s makeup, add vampire teeth, etc. One night before Halloween, I wanted to put on her makeup to see how it would look. She wanted blood running down her chin. We had her face all made up, and Kati came in the bathroom to see. She started crying!! We quickly decided the blood would not be an option that year. ha

I titled the layout, “Spooky, But No Blood” and since the story was so important to the layout, I added the title and story right in the center.

I printed out two of my favorite photos of her from that Halloween in a 4×6″ size. A Phantom Element Sticker (SPOOKY) goes great with my title. I also used some older Pink Paislee alphas that are still my favorite. The orange sticker letters are older also, from the Hocus Pocus Glitter Sticker Alphabet. I added some yellow paper in from the Nantucket line to add just one more color. The bat is just hand cut. I was going to stitch some scallops at the top to resemble the bat wings, but I decided cutting cardstock in this shape would work just as well…and be less time consuming.

A journaling tip for you: cut a piece of transparency the size that you need and place it on your page. Write your journaling directly onto the transparency with a Sharpie. This way if you make a mistake, you can remove it. You can also slide it around to see where you would like it to be.

I added a piece of a Phantom sticker and a Phantom brad to the photo.

Sometimes I forget that scrapbooking is all about telling the stories, so this was a terrific challenge for me, and I enjoyed it very much! Your own handwriting will be special to those who see your layouts years from now, so use it, even if you don’t think it looks good on your layouts. Some day it will be meaningful to others to see your writing!

Use Your Stash! – And So It Begins

Hi everyone!

My challenge this month was to dip into my stash and this might be one of my all-time favorite ones because of two reasons: I love so many of the older Pink Paislee lines and they all go so well together. On the layout below I used lines from this release, the previous release and two of last year’s releases. The Pink Paislee lines match wonderfully regardless of how old or new they are:

Since my layout is about my son’s first day at his new school, I thought it would be appropriate to use the Old School line so I started with that. Then, I added my two favorite lines: Sweetness and Hometown Summer and even though this was a stash challenge, I couldn’t resist pulling out one of the papers and a brad from the new Phantom line. I also mixed in Cushies, alphas from the Old School line, and the new Wood Shop alphas.  A few carefully placed stickers, banners, and embellishments and my layout was done.

I must admit that while I love all of Pink Paislee’s lines, but, for me, the true magic happens when I get to mix them up. I love seeing how well they all fit together.

Here are a few details:

and

So what about you? Do you like to mix older and newer lines or do you prefer to stick to one single line at a time? If you like to mix them in, which are your favorite lines to mix? I’d love for you to share!

And if you do mix lines please do to share it with us in the Live Pink! Gallery.

Get Sketchy {Summer}

It’s sketch time!  I love sketches!  Here is this month’s Page Maps sketch.

And here is my take.

Because of the back lighting in the photo, no two photos looked similar, so I used the same photo.  In photoshop I flipped the same image and printed them out.  Just a fun take on using photos.

I had so much fun with this sketch.  I hope you give it a try as well.  I would love to see what you create so be sure to link back to this post and upload it to the Pink Paislee Gallery.

Hot Hues! Color Challenge

Hi everyone! I’m back this month with an amazing Hot Hues challenge. Just in case you missed it before, hot hues is a new challenge where we give you a picture to use as an inspiration for colors that you can then use on your scrapbook pages. This month’s challenge comes from this inspiring picture:

Don’t you wish you owned a pretty typewriter like that? I have an old one but it’s a boring grey color. Maybe I should paint it! Anyhow, back to your inspiring colors for this month, I loved this mix of greens, oranges, blues, and pink.

Here’s my layout:

I really like to mix several Pink Paislee collections on my layouts and this one was no exception. Here’s a list of what I used:

Five collections on one layout!

Here are a few other things I did on my layout:

I often like to make clusters on the edges of my layouts where I can have pops of bits of color. On this one, I wanted to underline the ephemera word from Daily Junque but I couldn’t do it after I glued it since it’s sitting on a button which I cannot stitch through. So I stitched the paper first and then glued it down. It looks like it’s stitched all the way through so it gives me the effect I want without the trouble.

I rarely create themed layouts and this one is not about the summer, yet I really wanted to use that orange bottle from Hometown Summer but I didn’t want it to say “Orange Soda” so I just took a piece of paper from Sweetness and cut off the name from the paper. Each paper has the line’s name on a bottom strip, so I just cut off “Sweet” and left the rest alone. Then I stitched through the paper and glued it on the sode bottle so I could cover up the writing and now it looked exactly as I wanted!

I know I’ve talked about this before but I wanted to mention one more time that I also colored my cushies with a copic marker for this layout. I wanted the alphabets to closely match the color of the chair my kids are sitting in and was able to get pretty close using the markers.

Finally, here’s the journaling for the page:

A few weeks ago we went on a vacation to Santa Cruz. The two of you immediately started playing together. David read books to Nathaniel. Nathaniel gave hugs to David, You both played with silly putty and you laughed and laughed together. Seeing the two of you like that was another proof that having two kids was a great decision. We love watching the way you two play together and love each other.

Thank you so much for letting me share my page and I hope this color combination speaks to you as much as it did to me. Make sure to share your pages in the Live Pink Gallery!
