Mixed Media – altered wood

Hello everyone! Karola here with another project! This time I was assigned the task of creating a Mixed Media project, and as you well know I’m not a mixed media girl, but I have in my stash a lot of different kinds of media and love new challenges, so I decided to experiment a little.

Today I would like to show you a layout based on Mistables collection and some other, oldest products. My page have an important element in the center – this is a wooden cover from Mistables Wood Album. I decided to alter it using different media and techniques such as: painting with acrylic paint, heat embossing, misting and coloring with distress ink pads. The wooden cover is stucked with the 3d foam tape to the background so we can hide there an additional images, letters, tags, personal journaling – how I did. Let’s see the final result:

I did recently some very interesting photos of Rose, there are a truly autumnal photos and decided to create a multi-layered, “thankful” page.

So let’s start to alter our wooden cover, because it will be one of the leading decor on my website. This idea has added a lot of texture and dimension of the whole layout!

Prepare a sharp, stiff brush and acrylic paint in white color.

Cover the entire surface, put a thicker and uneven layer of paint to create a beautiful texture…

Leave to dry or use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed dry the surface. Then prepare the mask, white embossing powder (or any color you want, but white is clearly visible) and heat embossing gun. Put the mask on the surface and then put a lot of embossing ink on uncovered pieces of mask, then remove the mask and put a lot of embossing powder, remove the excess and start to melt embossing powder using heat gun.

Now we have a wonderful pattern and beautiful texture on our wooden cover. So we can add some color to match the background of the page, but also a little distress to imitate the old, weathered wood. I used a few colors of Glimmer Mists (Marigold, Burnt Red, Yellow Daisy and Mustard Seed) and paper towel to wipe off the excess color from the embossing pattern.

At this point, we can still add some color matched to our background, in my page it’s green, so I used three colors of distress ink pads (Peeled Paint, Shabby Shutters and Frayed Burlap) to add green color on the edges of the cover.

And here is the final result – absolutely unique layer for my Thankful page :) Of course you can decorate wooden cover in this way for your album, not layout!

Time for a few close – ups, to see how this altered cover working on finished page:

Mist Mania – Using Watercolor Paper

Hi everyone!

When I found out this month that I was scheduled to do the mist mania post, I panicked a bit. I don’t really use mists on my layouts. The few times I’ve tried it have consistently ended up with disastrous outcomes and the cardstock invariably ended up in the trash. Maybe it’s because I have a computer science background but I like having control over where things go on my pages. And the thing about mists is that….well you can’t really control them.

So while I’m too obsessive compulsive to use mists on my layouts, I do love to use them on watercolor paper and I thought it might be a good idea to show you how wonderfully they interact with that medium in case you hadn’t tried it yet.

I tore a page out of my Strathmore Watercolor journal and the first thing did was to cover the background with Party Pink Glimmer Mist. Here’s how it looked.

And the method I use on my watercolor pages also applies to scrapbook elements. So I will walk you through it as I color the Mistable label. The first thing I do is get a baby wipe and spray my mist on to the wipe. I bring the nozzle pretty close to make sure there’s a lot of spray and to make sure it doesn’t spray all over my desk. Here’s how the wipe looks with the Turquoise Blue I used.

And then I use that wipe to spread the color on to my element.

This gives the mist a more even look since I am not spraying it but I am spreading it. I don’t like the sprayed look so this works better for me. If you prefer the sprayed look, you can do that, too of course. You can even wipe it first and then spray on top of it.

The nice thing about the watercolor paper is that because it is a more porous surface than cardstock, the color really seeps into the nooks and crannies of the paper and it’s deep and rich. You can do this on other porous surfaces, like canvas or muslin, too. I also like that the watercolor paper I used is really thick so it doesn’t warp at all when I wipe the ink all over it.

Once I had my tag and background, I used the Nantucket trims, trading cards, wood shapes, and ephemera to create my art journal page.

You’ll notice I also used one of the Mistables Scallop Ribbons and the same method to color it with Aquamarine Glimmer Mist and then stamped on it. I even colored my wood shapes with Marigold to give them a yellow hue. And I wiped the wood letter with the same Party Pink as my background to give it a bit of a pop.

Here is a closeup so you can see just how rich the color is when you use watercolor paper:

There you go. If you’re like me and feel scared of mists, I hope you try my method of spreading them using a baby wipe and I hope you experiment with using them on different backgrounds.

If you’ve experimented with your mists, please share them with us in the Live Pink Gallery, I would love to see them!

She Art Mixed Media Canvas and TWO Giveaways!

Hi everyone!

I’m here to share a mixed media piece with you this week. I am a huge mixed media fan and when I see a new class I can’t resist signing up, especially when it sounds as amazing as Christy Tomlinson’s She Art Workshop. I just finished the course and it was one of the best I’ve ever taken (which says a lot since I have taken quite a few of them.)

I’ve created a few “she art” pieces during Christy’s class and I wanted to share them with you. Since I wasn’t very sure if I would do a good job, I did my very first girl in my art journal (I write text on the left side which is why it’s empty.):

Now that I’d practiced a bit, I was ready to move to another piece. This time, I tried to create a whole scene and had a lot of fun with my girl:

As you can see, except for some generic stamps and rubons, both pieces only use Pink Paislee products. The bright colors and shapes in our papers make them perfect for mixed media pieces.  On this canvas I mixed papers from the Hometown Summer, Daily Junque and Soiree collections.

Because SHE IS amazing; Christy has offered to give away not one but TWO seats to our Pink Paislee blog readers. She is giving away one seat in She Art Workshop (starts April 11) and one seat in her brand new She Had Three Hearts Workshop (starts May 23). Christy is an amazing teacher; these workshops have detailed videos that go through her process step by step and I have already signed up for her second class. I cannot recommend them enough.

To be eligible for the giveaways, leave a comment on this blog post and we’ll announce the winners on April 7th.

And, if you’ve been using Pink Paislee products in your mixed media projects, we’d love to see those, too!
